The last time Bayern Munich overturned a first leg deficit in the Champions League

Bayern Munich have the simple task of overturning a three-goal deficit when they host Manchester City in their Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday night.

The Thomas Tuchel era in Bavaria has started rather inconspicuously after Bayern's ruthless top officials opted to part ways with project boss Julian Nagelsmann in favour of the 2021 Champions League winner.

Their plan far exceeds the here and now in regards to the appointment, but Bayern have already exited the DFB-Pokal under Tuchel's watch and are at severe risk of being dumped out of Europe, too. Die Roten aren't too familiar with first leg deficits in the Champions League, and they'll have to pull off something quite remarkable if they're to advance into the semi-finals at City's expense.

Here's a reminder of the last time Bayern overturned a first leg deficit in Europe.

When was the last time Bayern Munich overturned a first leg deficit in the Champions League?

Porto were not expected to give Pep Guardiola's Bayern much of a headache when they met in the 2-2014/15 Champions League quarter-finals. The Portuguese outfit had benefitted from a kind draw to reach the last eight, while Bayern navigated a tricky group before thumping Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 in the round of 16.

However, a shoddy performance from the Bavarian behemoths away from home in the first leg meant they fell 3-1 behind at the halfway point in the tie.

This was a Porto side containing the likes of Ricardo Quaresma, who scored an early brace in Portugal, and the Casemiro, while current Wolves boss Julen LoPetegui was patrolling the home dugout. Bayern, meanwhile, were without David Alaba, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, and Bastian Schweinsteiger for both legs.

Pep certainly had his work cut out, but their first-half performance in the second leg would suggest they took the defeat at the Dragao personally.

They restored parity in the tie after 22 minutes and were 5-0 up at half-time. Porto simply couldn't cope with Bayern's blitzkrieg. Xabi Alonso put the finishing touches on the rout in the closing stages as Guardiola's men advanced into the last four.

What happened next?

Bayern faced Guardiola's former employers Barcelona in the semi-finals, and the Spaniard's bold man-marking approach against MSN saw the Bundesliga giants initially paid off before they conceded three late goals at the Camp Nou.

A miracle akin to what Bayern need to produce against City was required in the second leg, and they certainly gave it a good go. Mehdi Benatia - remember him! - opened the scoring after seven minutes, but a Neymar brace before half-time halted Bayern's momentum.

Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller in the second half meant Bayern won on the night, but Luis Enrique's Blaugrana held on before they beat Juventus 3-1 in the final.
