Predators vs Senators Picks, Predictions & Odds Tonight - NHL

It’s a quiet night on the ice with just a single NHL game between the Nashville Predators and Ottawa Senators on the docket. While both teams are on the outside of the playoff picture, the Preds and Sens have quality underlying metrics despite failing to pile up wins since the holiday break.

Nashville and Ottawa have both driven possession and won the expected goals battle at five-on-five out of the break, but the Preds have a 29th-ranked 6.2 team shooting percentage, and the Sens have a league-low .886 team save percentage.

Something has to give tonight, and here are our free NHL picks with a breakdown of the latest NHL odds for the Predators vs. Senators matchup on Monday, January 29.

Predators vs Senators predictions

Goaltending has been a shortcoming for the Ottawa Senators all season, and they’ll turn to inexperienced Mads Sogaard between the pipes tonight. Sogaard’s .884 save percentage and 3.44 GAA across 24 NHL appearances are eyesores, but he’s been solid in the AHL this season with .920 and 2.48 marks.

Similarly, shooting efficiency hasn’t been a strength of the Nashville Predators, and their 7.7% 5-on-5 shooting percentage ranks sixth last. A quick peek at the cast of characters jumping the boards for Nashville doesn’t include a who’s who of talented goalscorers, either. The Preds also rank sixth last in goals per 60 minutes (2.21) at 5-on-5 and sport a 20th-ranked 19.4 power-play percentage.

So, even with Ottawa allowing the second-most goals (3.1) and eighth-most expected goals (2.69) per 60 at 5-on-5, I’m not convinced Nashville is the team capable of capitalizing.

Additionally, I expect the Predators to continue their trend of playing low-scoring games, leaning on the improved play of Juuse Saros. He’s turned in a .930 save percentage and 2.05 GAA across his past six starts, and there have been five goals or fewer in each of Nashville’s past seven games.

The Senators allowed seven unanswered goals to the New York Rangers after taking a 2-0 lead last time out, so there will be added attention to defensive detail from Ottawa. There also haven’t been many games where Ottawa has had its entire roster. Centers Josh Norris and Shane Pinto have both missed considerable time, and defenseman Thomas Chabot has only suited up for 23 games.

Pair Nashville playing to the Under in seven straight, and a full Ottawa lineup battening down the defensive hatches in front of Sogaard, and I like the Under 6.5 goals Monday.

Under 6.5 goals

+260 at Sports Interaction

This season has been a disaster for Ottawa, but as noted, the Sens are finally playing with their full lineup. I am also particularly impressed with the recent turnaround in the 5-on-5 play of the Senators. Ottawa has driven possession with a dominant 56.0 CF% while generating 52.4% of the expected goals and ranking second in xGF per 60 (2.87) through 13 January games.

Simply put, those numbers don’t line up with a team that’s gone 4-7-2 this month, and league-worst goaltending has been the back breaker all season. I’m not anticipating instant improvement in the crease for Ottawa, but a full and healthy lineup playing closer to its potential will go a long way to help.

As noted, I expect the Sens to be more defensive minded with Sogaard starting Monday, and Ottawa winning a low-scoring Game on home ice.

Predators vs Senators moneyline and Over/Under analysis

There has been movement to the Ottawa moneyline through Sports Interaction. The Senators opened as a +105 home underdog but are trading at -115 as of Monday afternoon. It’s a significant move, and it also aligns with the adjustments across the industry. Pinnacle also moved Ottawa from +106 to -106.

This total has also seen adjustments. Sports Interaction moved the Under 6.5 back to the opening +100 odds after testing -105 early Monday. It was the second time the Under moved to -105, too. I wouldn’t anticipate any significant movement leading into puck drop, and especially with the 6.5 total being a consensus number.
